Suggestions and Advice1. Dry Brush Massage: Your skin is your largest eliminative organ. Hundreds of thousands of sweat glands on your skin not only regulate your bodies’ temperature, but also help in detoxifying the blood and in the elimination of health-threatening toxins from the system. Dry brush massage stimulates and increases blood circulation; stimulates the lymphatic system; removes dead layers of skin and other impurities keeping the pores open; rejuvenates the nervous system; stimulates hormone and oil-producing glands; helps prevent colds; and rejuvenates the complexion making it look younger. You will need a natural bristle brush, a luffa or a rope glove or mitt. Starting from the soles of the feet scrub the skin vigorously in a circular clockwise motion always towards the heart. When you reach the hips go from the hands to the shoulders followed by back and abdomen, chest and neck. Brush for five to fifteen minutes hard enough so that your skin will become tingly, warm and glowing. The best time is first thing in the morning and before going to bed at night. Always take a shower after and scrub the skin with a sponge, washcloth, luffa, rope mitt or glove to remove dead skin particles and toxins loosened by the brushing. Dry brush massage is of major importance during the fast as the body is eliminating copious amounts of toxins through the skin. This helps to spare the liver and kidneys extra work. Dry brush massage is health promoting after the fast and should be done regularly to help promote good health and a beautiful complexion.2. Exercise: It is important to exercise during the fast to assist the body in cleansingthe blood and tissues and to regenerate and revitalize all the bodies functions. Forthese reasons it is advisable to do plenty of walking and mild exercise during yourfast. Walking, swimming, bicycling, dancing, rebounding, spinning, exercising inwater etc. will accelerate your heart rate and greatly assist in your detoxification. Useyour exercise time to incorporate meditation into your exercise program by usingdifferent mantras or affirmations in rhythm to your breathing and exercise movements.Avoid strenuous exercise.3. Sweat: Besides the sweating you will be doing during your exercise programs, additional sweating greatly assists the body in detoxification and helps spare the liver and kidneys extra work. A 30-minute Far-infrared sauna with medical ozone, or without ozone if not available, is one of the most powerful detoxification protocols that you can do. Next would be a Thai herbal steam bath for 10 to 20 minutes in one or two sessions with a 5 to 15 minute interval between sessions, or a normal steam bath or sauna with the same time frame as the Thai herbal steam. Incorporate ozone with all steam baths and saunas if available. Do not over do it, if you are not comfortable with these lengths of time, then shorten them to what you are comfortable with and try to work your way up to these times. If you suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, malignant tumors, any acute disease, allergic dermatitis, or if your pregnant, nursing or menstruating etc. you should seek the advice of a health care professional before beginning a steam or sauna program. Far-infrared saunas are generally allowed for most of the above conditions, but again seek professional advice. I would advise everyone to purchase a Far-infrared sauna cabinet for use at home and use it regularly. I would also recommend purchasing a medical ozone generator for use in making ozonated water for drinking, washing your food, rectal insufflations, to use for ear infections etc. and for use in your sauna. Whenever using ozone with a sauna is mentioned, this refers to a portable sauna where your head is outside of the sauna. You should never inhale ozone.4. Sunshine: Regular exposure to sunshine helps in creating stronger muscles, denser bones, richer blood, healthier nerves, greater endurance, and much more. Over sunning just like overeating can be harmful. Begin your sun exposure slowly if you’re not already a regular sunbather. Start with 5 minutes on each side and work your way up to 30 minutes on each side either in a one-hour session per day or two sessions of half an hour. It is best to sunbath early in the morning and/or late in the afternoon during the summer as the suns ultra-violet radiation is not so intense at these times. In the winter, midday is the best time. Use coconut oil before and after sunbathing. This helps keep the skin from drying out and offers some protection. Do not use sunscreens or sunglasses, as these will block the suns beneficial rays from entering the body. A broad-spectrum anti-oxidant not only helps the body in fighting free-radicals, but also helps in preventing sun damage to the skin.5. Breathing: Practice pranayama (controlled breathing) at least twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening. Sit or lie in a comfortable position with your back straight to allow for maximum energy flow through your body. Slowly inhale filling the bottom lobes of your lungs first so that you can feel your abdomen expanding, continue to inhale evenly and smoothly until you can feel your chest expanding and you have filled the middle lobes of your lungs, continue to inhale slowly and evenly until you can feel the upper lobes of your lungs completely fill with air, raising your collar bones. Hold this breath for two or three seconds. Now exhale slowly and evenly feeling your chest relax until your abdominal muscles are squeezing against your lower back and you have expelled all the air from your lungs. Hold the exhale for two or three seconds and continue with the same procedure for ten breaths or more. Make your inhale and exhale last for the same amount of time. A slow count of six is good to begin with and you can increase this count to what you are comfortable with. Instead of counting you may like to silently repeat a mantra, affirmations or visualize your charkas etc. Ideally you should practice pranayama two to four times a day for 10 minutes or more per session. The extra Prana or Chi plus the extra oxygen you receive from such breathing greatly aids in your detoxification as well as your overall sense of well being. Air as nourishment is just as important to good health and well being as food and water. Use a high quality air ionizer for home, office, computer and car. Inhaling ionized air increases the body’s metabolic rate and boosts the immune system. This greatly enhances healing and regeneration on a cellular level accelerating the detox process.6. Enemas and Colonics: During a fast, the regular movement of the bowels by muscle contractions called peristalsis is shut down. For this reason, normal bowel movement ceases leaving copious amounts of impurities, wastes, toxins, fecal matter, worms, parasites and mucoid-plaque etc. in the body, which may cause autotoxemia (self-poisoning). You may have some bowel movement with a mucoid-plaque removal program because of all the fiber you are ingesting, but it still is not sufficient for removing all the accumulated waste from your system. For these reasons it is important to do colonics and/or enemas and/or colema boards daily during a fast. The best time to do an enema or colonic is first thing in the morning. If you do a second enema do it in the evening. When doing colonics you will have a professional to see you through it. When first doing an enema you may not be able to do 2 liters of water at one time, if not, simply do as much water at a time as you comfortably can until you have used the whole two liters and try to work your way up to retaining the whole two liters at the same time. You can obtain a 2-liter enema bag from most drug stores. Fill it with 2 liters of pure lukewarm water 38 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit) to which you add a few drops of lemon or some chamomile tea (not mandatory). The best position for an enema is on your knees with your bottom in the air and your head on the floor and the enema bag hanging approximately1meter (three feet) above your anus. Lubricate the nozzle with aloe gel or other natural cream or oil or saliva and make sure there is no air left in the tube, gently insert the nozzle and allow the water to flow into your colon. Take a deep breath and expel all the air from your lungs and try to suck the water as deep as you can up into your colon without allowing any air to enter. This sucking technique can take some time to master. If you are not comfortable with this technique, then just relax and let the water flow naturally. If you feel discomfort or pain, stop the flow of water by pinching the tube or closing the valve and take some deep breaths, and continue in this manner until the bag is empty or you have taken in as much water as you comfortably can. Try to hold the water in your colon as long as you comfortably can up to 16 minutes. While holding the water in, first lie on your back, then your right side, then your stomach and lastly your left side for equal amounts of time. Gently massage your colon in a counter-clockwise motion beginning at the bottom of your ascending colon (lower right side just above your pelvis), to your transverse colon (in line with your lower ribs), to your descending colon (left side). When using a colema board you will be doing 16 to 20 liters of water in one session while in a reclined position. Again, try to work your way up to retaining two liters of water at a time before expelling it. When using either a colema board an enema or a colonic, try to make sure that you have evacuated all the water from your colon before you finish. Use ozonated water if available. Put a colander in the toilet so you can see what you are expelling. Another great enema is a wheat grass or liquid chlorophyll enema; add one to two ounces of freshly prepared wheat grass juice or liquid chlorophyll to two liters of water.7. Coffee Enema: A coffee enema makes the liver produce extra bile while opening the bile ducts allowing the liver to expel excess toxins into the bile which is then flushed from the liver. Do your first coffee enema on the third or fourth day of your fast and continue with the coffee enemas every third or fourth day. To do a coffee enema add three heaping tablespoons of organic coffee (it is mandatory that the coffee be organically grown) to one liter of water and bring to a light boil for three minutes and then simmer for twenty minutes with the lid on. Strain and let cool to body temperature. Put the coffee into your enema bag and use the same technique as above for a normal enema except, you retain the coffee enema for 12 to 15 minutes lying on your right side. Coffee enemas can help you feel much better during a healing crisis, although it can on rare occasions cause nausea or vomiting due to the excess mucoid-plague blocking the pyloric valve and not allowing it to close properly causing the excess bile to flow into the small intestines and stomach. If this happens simply drink strong peppermint tea or have a psyllium shake with extra bentonite or healing clay.8. Yoga: If you do not already practice Yoga, this is a great time to start. Yoga has many great physical, mental and spiritual benefits. There are many great publications and videos available on Yoga and Yoga classes are being offered in most communities throughout the world. Yoga also greatly assists in moving the lymphatic system, which is especially beneficial during a fast.9. Meditation: Practice some form of meditation daily in combination with relaxation, concentration, visualization, affirmations, chanting and prayer.10. Massage and Body Work: Massage and other forms of body work such as shiatsu, reflexology, acupressure, polarity, rolfing and reike etc. are of great benefit during a fast. Some of these benefits include improved circulation, muscle relaxation, stress reduction and improve lymphatic drainage (toxin removal and immune support). Human skin-to-skin contact has been shown to release endorphins, which elevate ones mood and stimulates immune system function. Studies have shown that stress reduction from massage has health benefits relating to the musculoskeletal system, the cardiovascular system and the immune system.11. Flower Essences and Gem Elixirs: The use of flower essences and gem elixirs during the fast helps to balance and align the subtle bodies and chakras and to awaken the chakras. This can help to harmonize the body-mind-spirit complex during the fast. Some of the best preparations are: Silver sword, Papaya, Lotus, Star sapphire, Quartz and Self-heal. These gem elixirs and flower essences can be obtained from Pegasus Products.12. Sex: It is best to abstain from sexual activity during the fast to conserve ones energies for healing and regenerating.13. Smoking: Do not smoke during your fast. Smoking only deteriorates your health at a time when you are trying to rebuild it. Fasting is probably the easiest and best way to rid ones self from any addiction whether it be smoking, drugs, coffee, etc. During the fast you are eliminating toxins and poisons at such an accelerated rate that the body cleanses itself of all physical addictions within a matter of days. It also greatly enhances your psychological capabilities to stop any addiction.14. Drugs: The withdrawal from certain prescription drugs that have been used over a long period of time should be gradual and carefully supervised by a doctor. Re- creational drugs should be stopped completely. Consult your doctor.15. Contraindications for Fasting: If you are suffering from malnutrition, extreme emaciation or any acute, chronic or serious illness or disease it is necessary to consult with a doctor who is knowledgeable in fasting. Whenever consulting a doctor, health care practitioner or professional is mentioned, it applies to one who is well versed in fasting protocols. Pregnant or lactating women should not fast.16. Where and When: Whenever possible your fast should be done in nature away from large cities and pollution. Fasting is best done in a warm climate. If this is not possible then be sure to keep yourself warm and wear the appropriate clothing. You can do a juice fast one to four times a year for a week to 14 days once you are well versed in the art of fasting. Fasting once a week or twice a month on the full moon and the new moon or once a month for 3 days also has great health benefits. Therapeutic fast from 14 to 40 days or more should be supervised by a professional.17. Healing Crisis: A healing or detoxification crisis during your fast is a sign that your body is overloaded with toxins. This is a positive signal that your body is detoxifying and healing itself. You should not stop your fast during a healing crisis but rather assist all of your eliminative systems with such cleansing techniques as colonics and enemas, dry brush massage, saunas, sunbathing, herb teas, organic juices, exercise, various forms of body massage, etc. Common signs of a healing crisis include; headaches, sweating, sore muscles and joints, bad breath, body odor, rashes, nausea, vomiting, bloating and gas, sleepiness, weakness or exhaustion. It is best to stop your fast if you are suffering from an extreme mental or nervous condition or enter a cycle of high fevers. Consult with your doctor. You may also experience mental and emotional crisis during your fast such as anger, hate, envy, irritability, loose of will power, uselessness, etc. This is a great opportunity to deal with such matters by seeing them for what they are and forgiving yourself and others and becoming a more loving, positive, happier and more joyful person.18. Spiritual and Mental Awareness: Fasting not only regenerates and revitalizes your body, but also stimulates your mental state. It also increases your spiritual awareness. That is why it is important to adopt a relaxed positive attitude. Try to rid yourself from your normal everyday problems and worries, and let your higher spiritual self shine through. Eliminate negative thoughts of pain, fear, sadness, hate, envy, rigidity, separateness etc., and replace them with positive thoughts of oneness, love, joy, nurturing, forgiving, flexibility, celebration etc. Positive thoughts are one of the most powerful tools you have in obtaining and maintaining optimal physical, mental and spiritual good health. Positive thoughts activate the pituitary and pineal glands which are responsible for most brain and body functions. Begin with whatever form of meditation works for you or just be still and quiet. After meditation, lie on the floor being quiet, still and calm and practice relaxation by mentally relaxing your entire body beginning with your toes and working your way up to the crown of your head. Next practice concentration by being fully conscious and alert and concentrating on something positive, be it the flame of a candle, a holy picture, a mandala, etc. Next practice visualization by picturing in your heart and mind how you would like things to be. Finally practice affirmations by consciously with all your heart and mind insisting that what you saw in your visualization is happening NOW. Continue with your visualizations and affirmations throughout the day and night. This is a time of rest, meditation and renewal of your body, mind and spirit.20. Protocols 1 through 10 with the exception of 6 and 7 should be continued on a regular basis after the fast to enhance your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.21. Detoxification is an on going process because of the fact that we are constantly being retoxified with new toxins on a daily basis. For this reason, the protocols mentioned in this paper may be incorporated into ones lifestyle to insure a long, healthy, productive and happy life. Treating illness and disease is not the answer, living a life style that addresses the causes of illness and disease will not only eliminate them, but will prevent them from appearing again or in the first place. If you have any questions, please fell free to contact me at: stevetlw (at) yahoo.com
